General Safety
In general, fisting is a relatively safe form of sex in regards to HIV and other STD transmission. When done using gloves, the risk posed to either partner in such a scenario if much less than nearly any other form of sex. However, in regards to the safety of the one being fisted, there is of course a greater risk is the top is too aggressive and does internal damage to his partner. That said, if done carefully and patiently, the risk here too is also minimal. It is a fact, that more people are harmed using toys than through fisting.
To ensure safety, here are some general guidelines (or what I refer to as the Three C's):
COMMUNICATION
First and foremost communication is the key to any good relationship, particularly one as intense as fisting. When you are just starting out, whether as a top or bottom, discuss it with your partner first, and make sure you both give feedback to the other throughout the session. If you’re a bottom, be sure to give your top feedback, both when something feels off or when you need a break, and also to give him encouragement and tell him when it feels good. Don’t let him guess. And as a top, be sure to ask your bottom for feedback, and if something feels off, if you see blood, or if you think that it’s time for a break, tell your partner. If you maintain good communication, you can both ensure a pleasurable time as you begin to explore.
CLIPPED NAILS
Obvious, but something that should never be overlooked. It takes only a few minutes to do and you can avoid the biggest risk of a problem occurring by taking this necessary precaution. And don’t forget to file those nails as well. You should file down, not just across. Use the file perpendicular to the edge of the nail in a downward motion. To test if your nail has any sharp edges or nicks, run it along your lower lip. Your lip is sensitive and you should be able to feel any edges to file off.
CRISCO
While Crisco is not the only recommended lube (see Lubes for more information), it is important that you use a good lube and plenty of it. Every individual seems to has his preference for what is the best lube. In general, in my opinion, the best lubes to use are grease based. They wont dry out and help maintain a good slick environment. Common ones are, Crisco, Slam Dunk and Boy Butter. However, another good lube to use, which is water-based, J-Lube. J-Lube was originally used by vetenarians for things such as artificial insemination. It is safe for humans and it is very slick. Read the label on how to mix it. See the section on Lubes for more info on this and the others. Other lubes sometimes used are, A&D ointment, Aboline and Silicone based lubricants. Whatever lube you decide to use, remember, when you are starting out, more is always better. My rule for a new top is always, “Take as much as you think you need, then before you begin, go back and take twice as much.”
Note – If you are using gloves or condoms, remember that any oil or grease based lube is NOT latex compatible. You must use either a water based lube such as J-Lube, or gloves and condoms that are non-latex such as polyurethane condoms and gloves or nitrile gloves. See Gloves and Lube for more information.
